The Legacy of Cecil the Lion
If you have been following this story, you’ll know that some dentist from the US
illegally shot and killed a beloved lion (named Cecil) in Africa. Unfortunately we can’t
resurrect Cecil, but there have been some positive results from this tragedy.
There has been an increased awareness and expressed animosity toward big game hunters
all over the world. Why should these rich people be allowed to pay big bucks to murder these wonderful creatures, stuff them and hang them on their walls so they can brag about
how macho they are?
The backlash has been encouraging: The dentist’s office has been picketed; he and his daughter ( also a big game hunter) have been harassed. Several airlines have adopted policies to not allow the transportation of trophies. Almost a million dollars have been donated to the Oxford University program that studied Cecil for over the past 7 years.
At the present time, many more tourists travel to Africa to go on Photo safaris,
bringing in money to improve the economy. Without the animals, where would they be?
Hopefully, the residents of the African nations will soon realize these
creatures are a valuable natural resource which they need to protect and preserve.
