My Bear Encounter – part 1

My husband and I decided to move to northern Idaho on a wooded plot of fifteen acres.  We wanted to experience living close to nature at its wildest.

One morning, I came into my third floor art studio and came face to face with a young bear.  He was on my deck, twenty feet above the ground looking in the French door.  I had seen plenty of bear out in the woods, but not up close and personal.  First, I did not panic.  I got my camera and took several great photos.  Then, the bear balanced on the log railing and continued to look in the window.

When he began to climb down the logs supporting the deck, I went out on the deck and looked down at the bear hanging on to the log support for the deck.  I said, hello to the bear and he looked up at me from about ten feet below.  He then made a move back up the log which sent me scurrying back to the safety of my studio.

After that bear encounter, I kept my doors locked so I would not find the bear inside my studio.

Jacquie Vaux grew up in the Pacific Northwest, soon developed an appreciation for nature by observing the native wildlife of the area. Encouraged by her grandmother, she began painting the creatures she loves and has continued for the past four decades. Now a resident of Ft. Collins, CO she is an avid hiker, but always carries her camera, and is ready to capture a nature or wildlife image, to use as a reference for her fine art paintings.
