Facing Extinction- is there any Hope?

Tiger Painting
Very few Tigers remain in the wild.

Facing Extinction… a Discovery Channel Special show aired on Dec 2nd, 2015; certainly had an impact, at least on me. Many species are becoming extinct at an ever increasing rate; such that over half of the species on this planet will not be around in 100 years.

What’s causing this? Well, it’s us: the humans who are continuing to rape and plunder this planet for our own selfish reasons without regard for the consequences.

  • Carbon Dioxide emissions are soaring now at a rate never seen before in history.
  • This is causing the oceans to become acidic; so much so that many creatures  like oysters are unable to form their shells.

This will injure the plankton in our oceans; a food for many marine species.

We will see a reduction in fish and marine mammals.

Our seas and oceans will become ghostly.

However, this film feature came with some glimmer of hope.

Shark fin soup, an Asian delicacy, has led to the slaughter and torture of millions of animals; but a recent educational program in China has decreased the consumption of this dish by 70%.

Another positive program reeducated the Shark hunters by encouraging them to preserve the shark population, and create tourism based on diving with the sharks. As soon as they realized that they could derive an income created by preserving the sharks, they stopped killing them.  Win-Win.

Let’s hope that we can find more solutions like these to allow nature’s wonderful creatures to grow and prosper. To see more Paintings of endangered animals Click HERE.

The realistic wildlife fine art paintings and prints of Jacquie Vaux begin with a deep appreciation of wildlife and the environment. Jacquie Vaux grew up in the Pacific Northwest, soon developed an appreciation for nature by observing the native wildlife of the area. Encouraged by her grandmother, she began painting the creatures she loves and has continued for the past four decades. Now a resident of Ft. Collins, CO she is an avid hiker, but always carries her camera, and is ready to capture a nature or wildlife image, to use as a reference for her fine art paintings.
