Animal Crossing: New Horizons Becomes Switch’s First Game To Sell 5 Million Boxed Copies In Japan

A huge achievement
by Ryan Craddock 4 hours agoAccording to Famitsu’s Japanese chart estimates, Animal Crossing: New Horizons has now surpassed five million physical sales in Nintendo’s home region. The game is the first on Switch to reach the impressive milestone.
The five million sales total has been achieved in just over three months and leaves New Horizons comfortably ahead of Switch’s other best-sellers. The latest Japanese chart data we currently have on record, which covered sales up until 21st June, has the second best-seller Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on 3.73 million physical sales, and third best-seller Pokémon Sword and Shield on 3.63 million.
Of course, if you were to add Animal Crossing’s digital sales into the mix – which could well have been boosted thanks to people staying at home due to the pandemic – its sales total would be considerably higher.
A couple of months ago, we shared Nintendo’s latest official worldwide sales figures for its best-selling Switch games – including both physical and digital sales combined. The data was correct as of 31st March, 2020, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons had already become Switch’s seventh best-selling game of all time after just 12 days on sale. It’s pretty safe to say that it will have since climbed further up that list.
Could Animal Crossing one day take the crown as Switch’s top-selling game? We definitely wouldn’t bet against it.
