Fun with the “Robber Jays”
In the fall, my husband Jim and I are winding down our hiking season. I love the wilderness, and enjoy getting out on our great trails. One of my favorite hiking trails is in Estes Park, part of the Rocky Mountain National Park, called Hollowell trail.
Last September we stopped for lunch at the end of the trail As we began to eat, a Grey Jay swooped down and landed on a branch of a nearby bush. I held out a peanut to him, and he delicately plucked it from my fingers.
They then entertained us making several trips eating nuts, and taking some back to their cache. (We later learned this is typical behavior for the Gray Jays; loading up supplies for the cold winter ahead.)
They would perch on my hand, or Jim’s head, and wait until we give them a treat.
We grabbed our cameras and began taking photos like crazy.
I enjoyed those birds so much.
It was one of my favorite wildlife moments.
